While Rome may not have a long-standing tradition of golf, it's nonetheless home to a number of beautiful courses close to the city and in the surrounding Italian countryside. There are a total of 22 golf courses in the city and surrounding region, and thanks to the sunny climate all of them are open 12 months a year.

Country Club Castelgandolfo - Golf course

For top Rome golf in a picturesque setting, the Country Club Castelgandolfo is hard to beat. Located a short distance from the city near Castelgandolfo, the Pope's summer residence, this course is overlooked by a magnificent 16th Century clubhouse. The course itself was designed by US golf architect Robert Trent Jones. Green fees are €50 during the week and €60 at weekends, including access to the driving range which costs €10 by itself. Advance reservation by telephone or internet is recommended. Accessible by car or taxi only.

Circolo del Golf Roma Acquasanta - Golf course

Located in the lush green eastern suburbs of Rome, this course is considered to be the Italian capital's most prestigious. Established back in 1903 by British diplomats, it has welcomed several famous names like Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and Bob Hope. You can get there by car or by public transport – get the Metro to Colli Albani and then take bus 663 or 664. Green fees are €80 Tuesday to Friday, €100 on Saturdays and Sundays. Costs include access to the driving range, which on its own costs €15 midweek and €20 at weekends. 18 holes, par 71.

Golf Club Parco de'Medici - Golf course

This is another top spot for Rome golf that is a bit more affordable. It's home to an 18-hole course and a nine-hole course, both of which are open to the public provided you book your round in advance. The 18-hole course is €60 Monday to Friday and €72 at weekends, but if you come after 3.30pm you can get a round for €40 and €45 respectively. The nine-hole course is €40 midweek and €45 at weekends, or €24 and €30 respectively after 3.30pm. 18 holes, par 71 and 9 holes, par 34.

Parco di Roma - Golf course

This top course, designed by architect PB Dye, is the most accessible for Rome golf, being located just 10 minutes' drive from the downtown area. You can even admire St Peter's Basilica from a distance as you seek to master this challenging round of white sand bunkers and fast rolling fairways. Unless you know someone that is a member, the course is only open to members of the public on Mondays. 18 holes, par 72.
