Information about car rental Rome

Renting a car in the Italian capital couldn't be simpler – a number of international agencies such as Hertz, Avis and Europcar are located right in the international arrivals hall. To make sure you get the deal you want, why not book your Rome car rental with one of these companies or a local rental firm on the internet before you depart. Sites include www.hertz.com, www.avis.com, and ww.europcar.com. Summer rates start at about €75 per day including taxes and surcharges for a small car.

Driving in Rome is much the same as at home, but there are a few things to watch out for. There are three different types of roads: autostrade (highways), strade statali (state roads) and strade communali (local roads). Most of the road signs have international symbols you will recognize, but they may also be written in Italian. Uscita means exit, while entrada means entrance and divieto di means no entry. Be careful to remember when refueling your car that gasolio is actually diesel – benzina is unleaded petrol. Stations within the city may close for a few hours during the day and on Sundays, while those on the highways are open 24 hours.

If you are planning to tour around outside the city, be aware that there are frequent tolls on the highways. The advantage of Rome car rental over public transport, however, is that many of the sights on the periphery of the city are not easily accessed by bus or train. Make sure to bring a map with you, or you can get a car with GPS navigation included from your rental company for an extra fee.
